Wike's Bold Declaration: 'No One Can Sack Me from PDP' Amidst Rising Party Tension
Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, has openly declared that no one within the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has the authority or power to suspend or expel him. This statement comes amid increasing tension within the PDP, especially as Wike continues to face criticism for his perceived alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), despite being a member of the opposition.
Wike, who played a pivotal role in the PDP’s political success in Rivers State during the last general elections, reminded his critics of his political weight. He said Rivers State, under his leadership, delivered the governor, three senators, 32 state assembly members, and 11 out of 13 House of Representatives members, all under the PDP. He argued that such a contribution cannot be overlooked and that those making threats of suspension or expulsion were only engaging in empty talk. According to him, no one in the PDP can suspend or remove him because he has earned his place through performance and loyalty to the ideals of fairness and justice.
Despite supporting President Bola Tinubu of the APC and being appointed as a minister in his cabinet, Wike insists he remains a PDP member. He clarified that his support for Tinubu stems from his belief in equity and inclusion, not necessarily a betrayal of the PDP. This has, however, drawn the ire of several party stakeholders and support groups who have called for disciplinary action against him. Some groups have even demanded his immediate expulsion for what they term "anti-party activities."
Wike previously approached the court to prevent the PDP from taking disciplinary actions against him, but a Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that the party has the constitutional right to suspend or expel any member, provided it follows due process as outlined in its constitution. This decision has further intensified discussions within the PDP about whether the time has come to formally discipline Wike or find a political solution to the growing rift.
The Rivers State chapter of the PDP has also expressed frustration with Wike’s conduct, accusing him of undermining the party while publicly aligning with a rival party. While calls for disciplinary action mount, Wike remains defiant and confident that no one in the PDP has the influence or legitimacy to challenge his standing within the party.
This unfolding drama continues to stir political debates across the country, especially as the PDP prepares for future elections and contemplates how to manage internal dissent without deepening existing divisions. Wike’s boldness, rooted in his political strength and achievements in Rivers State, makes him a figure both revered and controversial within the party.
