NDLEA Arrests Four Saudi-Bound Pilgrims Smuggling Cocaine During Hajj Preparation

In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted four individuals attempting to smuggle cocaine out of Nigeria to Saudi Arabia. The suspects—Usman Kamorudeen (31), Olasunkanmi Owolabi (46), Fatai Yekini (38), and Ayinla Kemi (34)—were arrested at Emerald Hotel in the Ladipo area of Oshodi, Lagos, on June 5, 2024, just before they were to embark on the Hajj pilgrimage.
The NDLEA revealed that the suspects were carrying a total of 2.20 kilograms of cocaine, cleverly concealed inside their bodies as pellets. Each person was found to have ingested about 100 pellets of the drug, which they intended to smuggle into Saudi Arabia. The suspects were preparing to board their flight to the holy city of Mecca, where millions of Muslims gather annually for the Hajj pilgrimage. This operation highlights the sophisticated and dangerous methods drug traffickers use to move illegal substances across borders. The NDLEA’s timely intervention stopped what could have been a major drug shipment from entering Saudi Arabia. After the arrests, NDLEA officials stated they are working closely with Saudi Arabian law enforcement agencies to identify and apprehend the final recipients of the drugs in Saudi Arabia. This cooperation is part of a broader effort to combat international drug trafficking networks and ensure that religious events like Hajj remain safe and free from criminal activity. The NDLEA also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that may relate to drug trafficking. They emphasized their commitment to protecting Nigeria’s borders and maintaining national security. This case sends a strong message that the NDLEA is actively monitoring and preventing drug trafficking, especially during significant times such as religious pilgrimages when traffickers may try to exploit increased travel and crowds.
